one plus one two plus one three plus one four: Having received an undergraduate degree in studio art and a graduate degree in architecture, I work to obscure the line between art and design. Accordingly, I am inspired by the geometric and rule-based works of François Morellet and Sol Lewitt as well as the minimalist / process based works of Agnes Martin.
This collection of drawings applies an algorithmic array (the repetition of an operation (+1)) to variably sized grids. The constraints of the algorithm, though restrictive, compel me to investigate new interpretations of or solutions to a relatively basic mathematical problem. Additionally, these drawings focus on an intensive process of priming, sanding, drawing, painting and redrawing lines with a range of materials. The surface and material manipulation helps soften the works, promoting the retention of flaws and making visible my hand. Thus, the rigorous material process works to balance the rigor behind the drawing’s creation.
My projects tend towards obsessive intricacy with an attention to detail that enables release. In this way, the work feels effortless. I know one plus one is two plus one is three plus one is four. And so, art – for me – is meditation … quietly and simply making things without knowing the end result outright.
